HAZARDS:  Hiking trips such as this one can involve significant exposure to wilderness hazards.  These can include extreme weather changes, difficult alpine terrain (like crevasses or cliffs), rockfall, wildlife encounters, and severe health issues such as hypothermia, dehydration, and altitude sickness. The ACC operates in uncontrolled, unmarked backcountry environments. Participants face several specific hazards during their trips:Environmental & Terrain Hazards: Unpredictable changes in the weather, rockfall, icefall, avalanches, cornices, crevasses, and swift creeks.Medical Emergencies:  Hypothermia is also a major threat if a hiker gets injured or wet and cannot generate body heat.Isolation & Evacuation: In alpine terrain, cellular communication is often impossible. Rescue and medical treatment can be significantly delayed depending on the weather and accessibility by helicopter.Physical Strain & Incidents: Slips, trips, falls, getting lost or separated from the group, and dehydration.Risk Management & Participant ResponsibilitiesSafety & Skill: Participants must be honest about their capabilities and carry the necessary gear (such as the “10 Essentials,” avalanche transceivers where applicable, and proper clothing).

ACC Waiver: All participants on this trip must be ACC members and are expected to have already read and signed their ACC Waivers.

Checklist of the 10 essentials you need for BC trails:
  1. Navigation: A physical topographic map and a compass (and the skills to use them), plus a GPS device as a backup. [1, 2]
  2. Communication: A fully charged cell phone. Due to challenging terrain in BC, a satellite communicator (such as a Garmin inReach or SPOT) is highly recommended. [1, 2]
  3. Sun Protection: Sunglasses, SPF sunscreen, and a hat to prevent sunburn and heat exhaustion at higher elevations. [1, 2]
  4. Insulation & Extra Clothing: Weather-resistant outer layers, a warm toque (beanie), gloves, and extra socks. Weather changes rapidly in the BC mountains. [1, 2]
  5. Illumination: A headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries. Being caught in the dark is the number one cause of overdue hiker calls in BC. [1]
  6. First-Aid Kit: A well-stocked kit containing blister dressings, bandages, protective gloves, and a pocket mask. [1, 2]
  7. Fire Starter: Waterproof matches, a lighter, and a commercial firestarter to help you stay warm in damp conditions. [1, 2]
  8. Emergency Shelter: A heavy-duty thermal space blanket or a large, bright orange emergency plastic bag that provides warmth and visibility. [1, 2]
  9. Nutrition & Hydration: Extra high-energy food and extra water, along with a water filtration or purification system. [1, 2]
  10. Tools: A multi-tool or a sturdy pocketknife for repairs and gear maintenance. [1, 2]
Note: In addition to these physical items, BC AdventureSmart always emphasizes the Three T’s: Make a Trip Plan, get the proper Training, and Take the Essentials. [1]
