SPEED BEACON  SEARCH PRACTICE (also an Easter Avi Egg hunt)

WHAT:  Get faster at finding your buried friends.  Make sure they join too, cos you want THEM to be even faster searchers than you.

 

WHY:  Get better at multi-burials and Team searching. Watch closely how your own beacon responds differently from other  beacons with interference.  Bring your VHF radios, heated gloves, crystal screens, a foil burrito wrapper, shovel blade, GPS watch, etc.  What if you get buried with your shovel blade blocking your signal?!?   Let’s experiment.

WHEN: Tues, Apr 7 2026,  7:45pm sharp. Dark out so we won’t need snow for this.  Rain or shine, just like life.

WHERE: patch of forest 60 m north of 1000 east 45th Ave Vancouver.  Multi-burial scenarios will run in the unlit grove of massive cedar trees.  Ample free parking.

 

WHO: This is exclusively for ACC members who have taken at least AST1, and can operate their device.  No training or instruction will be provided.   Be ready to hustle.

 

BRING:  Your beacon is required and at least one interference item other than your phone.  Optional items = headlamp.

HAZARDS:  Twisted ankle on dark slippery roots, vision loss from low hanging branches, eating too many chocolate eggs and other possible but improbable illnesses and injuries.  Recommended item: sturdy footwear.

Seems silly to spend perfectly good snow time on search practices, when we could be skiing!  Let’s practice now, especially since the snowpacks are going to get even weirder!
