Northern Terminus of Pacific Crest Trail – Manning Park

September 30th 2022

Description

This trip will be an overnight backpack to the northern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail to see Monument 78. The hike will be cancelled if the situation with the forest fire does not improve, in case of snow, or BC Parks closures.

BC Parks has rated this trail as ‘Moderate’: 12kms one way (approximately 4 hours) for an estimated round trip of 24kms, with an elevation gain of 200m. There is windfall on the trail and the trail condition may change depending on the state of the forest fire.

Planned itinerary: leave Vancouver in carpool on Friday morning, hike to backcountry campsite, hike back down on Saturday. Explore Manning Park area, return to Vancouver early evening on Saturday.

Participants should have experience doing overnight backcountry trips, all of the relevant gear for an overnight in the backcountry, including the 10 essentials, and relevant safety equipment such as a first aid kit and emergency communications (InReach, etc.) The pace will be average with the expectation of arriving within the estimated 4 hours – self assess fitness level accordingly. Participants should expect to remain together as a group for the duration of the trip and accommodate the slowest member. A backcountry permit is required for approx. $5, along with sharing the costs of carpooling.
