Description
Once Cypress closes for the season (exact date TBD), it becomes a popular destination for evening backcountry skiing, offering easy access and stunning views of the city and Howe Sound. The plan is to skin up to Strachan (~500 m elevation gain), and for those interested, we’ll do a loop back down to the car via the Christmas Gully. If you haven’t skied this classic run before, it’s a fantastic route that usually holds good snow later in the day. You can also ski the runs down. We’ll take a break at the top for some potluck food and drinks before skiing back to the cars.
This event is intended as a social/uphill ski evening for participants of the WNSTP2025 program, though others are welcome to join as well. We’ll split into smaller groups for the gully and enjoy the experience while skiing into Howe Sound!
Participants should be comfortable with their gear (full backcountry setup, including avalanche safety equipment) and able to ski safely down potentially variable snow on terrain no steeper than about 35 degrees. You don’t need to be graceful! If you’re not comfortable with backcountry skiing but have the necessary gear—or if this is your first year on skis —you’re welcome to ski down the runs instead. The uphill is easy. The runs will not be groomed, and they’re often churned up by machines, so there’s no guarantee of perfect snow conditions.
If the resort is still open, we´ll likely change location to Seymour and head up to First or Second pump. Feel free to email if you have any questions.
We’ll carpool as much as we can.
