Skyline Ridge Hike

July 7th 2025

Description

Hike from the Sea to Sky gondola up to Skyline Ridge via the Skyline Ridge Trail. This is about 18 km round trip with 1,000 m of elevation gain (about 5.5 hours not including breaks is my guess). Skyline Ridge is the col between Goat Ridge and Copilot Mountain. It is a nice alpine setting with great views. The pace will be moderate or on the gentle side of moderate as I’m getting over the longest cold ever. There’s still quite a lot of snow on the ridge, so expect to walk on snow for at least the last kilometre in.

Itinerary: Meet at the gondola parking lot at 9 am. Hike up, have lunch on the ridge, hike down. The gondola’s last download is at 7 pm, so we should have no trouble making that. If people want, we can have a drink at the gondola facilities after the hike.

Hazards: Some steep rocky sections, walking on moderately angled snow. Possibly breaking through a little way into the snow. Wildlife.

Stuff to bring: Sun protection, bug protection, water, and lunch. I suggest boots and gaiters to keep your feet dry(er). Also bring a rain shell and extra clothes because mountain weather is unpredictable. Besides the creek at 2 km from the gondola, there will be only snow available to replenish water. I will bring a GPS watch with track, a map, and an InReach satellite communicator. I don’t think an ice axe is necessary because the trail is not very steep.

Carpooling: Please do get together and carpool. I’m coming from downtown Squamish in the Eaglewind neighbourhood. Let me know if you’d like a ride.

Note: Requires gondola ticket. Day passes are about $75 ahead of time or $80 at the ticket window. I have an annual pass and can get a 20% discount at the ticket window for up to four other people. Email me if you want to get on the list for this discount. There’s also a fee for parking, so it pays to carpool. Email me if you want to save on parking by carpooling in with me from downtown Squamish. (Or, I hate to say it, you could save the parking fee if you park in the Chief parking lot, but it’s a busy lot.) If you don’t want to buy a pass and want extra vertical, you could hike up to the gondola via the Climb trail (900 vertical metres, about 4 km distance) and meet us at the top. A download-only ticket is $20. Let me know if you’re planning on this.
