Tantalus Hut – Overview & Access
The Tantalus Hut was built by the ACC in 1961 as a base for mountaineering in the Tantalus Range. It is located at the outflow end of Lake Lovely Water (elevation 3,850 feet) in the Coast Mountains, approximately 64 km northwest of Vancouver. The site lies within Tantalus Provincial Park at GR 819146 on map 92G/14 (Cheakamus River).
The hut is a two-storey wooden structure. Includes a large kitchen/dining area on the main floor equipped with dishes, cutlery, cookware (enough for 16), two 2-burner propane stoves (propane provided), wood burning stove (fire bricks provided). Two sleeping lofts above, equipped with foam mattresses for up to 16 people. The hut is kept locked. To book your stay, please use the link below to read the Hut Use and Booking Guidelines Policy and pay the overnight fees.
While hiking opportunities in the Tantalus area are limited, the scenery at Lake Lovely Water is spectacular. In good weather, visitors enjoy swimming, boating, and fishing. The region offers a wide variety of climbing opportunities of various grades, with classic alpine routes on peaks such as Tantalus (2,603 m / 8,540′), Dione (2,590 m / 8,500′), Alpha (2,305 m / 7,562′), Serratus (2,326 m / 7,632′), and others. Climbing in the area is covered in Climbing and Hiking in Southwestern B.C. by Bruce Fairley and Alpine Select by Kevin McLane. This is not a party destination; Mountain Culture is expected, with respect for the environment and fellow hut users and campers.
Season: June 1 – September 30
Reservations: Required; hut is locked, the code is changed periodically
