Multi-pitch Climbing Basics

June 24th 2024

Description

Intended as an introduction to and practice in a safe setting, multi-pitch climbing. This is targeted at newer lead climbers who feel comfortable to start looking at sport routes or trad with bolted anchor stations. Please note that I am not a guide or instructor, but have sufficient experience and enjoy teaching the basics to people willing to learn. Ideally, you will sign up with your climbing partner that you be going on multi pitches with. I will be prioritizing sign ups from BMC2024 members first, then paired partners.

***Please comment upon sign up confirming you meet the prerequisites, as well as the name of your intended partner.***

Prerequisites:
-Should be able to lead climb 5.7/5.8 outdoors comfortably. Most multi-pitches start in this grade range.
-Can lead belay your climbing partner. If you are not confident to lead climb, at minimum you should be able to belay your leader. I will not be demonstrating how to lead belay at this time.
-Able to set up and clean anchors.
-Rappelling.
-Stoke and a positive mindset! Unforeseen things sometimes happen on multis, it’s important to be able quest through to the top.

Required gear:
Helmet, harness, climbing shoes, personal anchor, belay/ rappel device (if you belay with a Grigri, ensure you have a device to rappel with as well), 2 locking carabiners (ideally HMS/pear), Prusik cord, headlamp.

Content:
-Communication between the leader and the follower.
-Setting up and cleaning anchors at bolted stations.
-Belaying your follower from above.
-Rope management.
-Discussing walking off vs. rappelling off of a climb.
-Possibly discuss trad anchors and other natural anchors if time allows.
-Discussing my own learnings from multi-pitches i.e. not bringing two backpacks if possible, water management, being flexible in climbing plans, etc.
-Discussing ideal first objectives.

Event will be in Squamish, likely in Cheakamus. There is currently some precipitation in the forecast, but do not foresee it as an issue. Please check back for updates. We will meet at St. David’s Church in N Van arrange carpools.
