Trials and Tribulations: Restoring Burton Hut by Anton Afanassiev
Burton Hut, located at the mouth of Sphinx Bay in Garibaldi Park, is the VOC’s oldest hut. Last summer, its age began to show, and urgent repairs were needed to save the beloved hut. Challenged by a late-season start, we worked to restore the hut through harsh weather and adversity.
Anton is a PhD student studying mathematical biology at UBC and has been involved in the backcountry scene for most of his time there. Over the past year, he has been the Huts Coordinator for the Varsity Outdoor Club (VOC). When the news that Burton Hut needed urgent repairs arrived, he took point in organizing the logistics for the repair. After handling the in-town logistics, he was at the hut for the full duration of construction.
