Coast Mountain High Routes with John Baldwin

October 22 2024
Floral Hall VanDusen.
Doors open at 6:30pm. Event starts at 7:00pm

John Baldwin is one of the greatest North American mountaineers and explorers of our time.
His contributions to the mountain community are widely known and recognized!

The Vancouver Section of the Alpine Club of Canada is honoured to host John to deliver a presentation on Coast Mountain High Routes.
John will talk about summer alpine traverses in the Coast Mountains. He will start by sharing some images from recent trips in the Chilcotin to the Potato Range, Niut Range and Rainbow Range. John is currently working on a guidebook to Coast Mountain High Routes that will describe 45 high routes and include everything from shorter traverses near Vancouver to the long alpine treks on the Coastal Divides above the inlets that John pioneered with John Clarke. The talk will finish with an overview of the book.

John Baldwin has been exploring the Coast Mountains of western British Columbia for over 40 years. Over these years, he has completed numerous first ascents and pioneered many long traverses on skis and on foot, often to remote areas that have rarely been seen or photographed!

As John would describe it on his website, for him, “the purpose of these explorations is to travel through the mountain wilderness, to climb high snowy peaks, to search for sheltered basins where the snow is deep and light, to look at patterns in the new fallen snow, stare at the chaos of a jumbled ice-fall or experience the stillness of a vast ice-field.”

John is also a researcher, photographer and writer who has made the outdoors accessible to many. His guidebook, Exploring the Coast Mountains on Skis has sold tens of thousands of copies and his topographic maps for ski touring have been widely used. John’s coffee-table books, Mountains of the Coast and Soul of Wilderness are an absolute visual treat!
