Monthly Social & Slideshow – “Chasing Waterfalls”

January 23rd 2024

Description

Join us on Tuesday, January 23 for our first monthly social of 2024! The theme is “Chasing Waterfalls: Canyoneering in the Pacific Northwest” and includes two presentations.

The social will be held in-person at the Floral Hall, VanDusen Botanical Garden (37th Avenue at Oak Street) in Vancouver. The doors will open at 6:30pm for socializing and the program will begin at 7pm.

Our presenters for the evening are Rob Szpak & Jon Obst. While still a relatively niche sport, at least in the lower mainland, these presentations will give you a glimpse of canyoneering in locations that we are blessed to have in our backyard.

Jon Obst:  After moving to Vancouver nearly a decade ago, Jon discovered a love of the outdoors which has since grown into a borderline obsession with canyoneering. This talk will briefly introduce canyoneering in general and how Jon personally got hooked on the sport a few years ago. The majority of the presentation will be devoted to highlighting what has quickly become Jon’s favorite canyon to descend: High Falls in Squamish.

Rob Szpak:  ACC Vancouver’s Quartermaster, Rob, is a skier, mountain-biker, climber, and an all-around mountaineer. But few know that Rob has also organized canyoneering trips. Rob will share his experience canyoneering the nearby Cypress Falls.
