Misty Icefield Traverse

April 8th 2017

Description

Please read the complete description before signing up.

An 8 day, self-supported trip to complete the Misty Icefield Traverse with opportunities for skiing and side trips. Note that I entered 2 weeks on the calendar to allow a lot of flexibility to get a good weather window for the second and third week of April. I would like to keep the group no larger than 6 people, and possibly 4 people, which would greatly simplify the car-shuttle. Ski objectives may include Green Mantle, Mt Pitt, Snowcap, Stave Pk, and Old Pierre.

I have done some preliminary planning, including reading TRs, studying the route and enquiring about the ferry service on Pitt Lake; however, there is still a lot to organize. In addition to meeting all of the other requirements for this trip, please only sign up if you are willing and able to attend pre-trip meetings (likely more than one), potentially volunteer to drive for the car shuttle (about 500km round trip from Vancouver) and help organize logistics including back-up plans where possible.

All participants are expected to have: a good attitude, ability to ski double black runs with a heavy pack, above average fitness for as much as 8 days and 70+kms of touring and skiing, AST 1 equivalent or better, glacier training, winter camping skills, prior experience on multi-day trips. Participants will be screened; please send an email to me describing your experience.

Further, all participants are expected to join a crevasse rescue practice day. This may mean sacrificing a ski/ biking/ hiking/ climbing day in the spring. Please consider this part of the trip.

For a trip of this length and complexity, skiing together beforehand is a requirement. If we have not skied together before, please sign-up for one of my day trips on the calendar or we can try to arrange something privately.
