Course: Top-Rope Anchor Building and Rappelling

April 23rd 2022

Description

April 24-24, 2022 (Sat-Sun), 12 participants

The ability to set up safe anchors for top roping is one of the most basic skills any outdoor rock climber must have. It’s a skill that must be mastered before progressing to more advanced topics such as lead climbing, trad climbing, etc.

This 2 day volunteer led course is intended to teach club members:
(a) how to build anchors for top roping, and
(b) how to rappel safely.

The course objective is to give participants a chance to learn different types of anchor setups, and to practice building them while in a controlled setting. The evaluation of anchors with respect to safety criteria is an important part of the course.

Curriculum

  • Overview of equipment.
  • Set up top rope anchors.
  • Evaluate top rope anchors.
  • Set up anchors for rappelling.
  • Practice rappelling.
  • Belaying from above.

Prerequisites

  • Experience belaying.

Community Contribution

A dozen or more willing volunteers, put in a thousand or more hours a year to make these courses happen, all of which include top-quality instruction at incredible value for money. We’ll literally share everything we know about staying safe in the mountains with you, because we want you to experience nature as we do.

That said, participation is a two way street, and if you’re going to take a course, we ask that you start thinking about ways to contribute back to the community also. Remember, we’re an entirely volunteer based community and this only works if everyone contributes!

Please consider becoming a trip-coordinator and hosting a trip (even just a simple hiking trip) when signing up for this course! You will be contacted by our Trip Director to prompt you to get a trip posted.
