Fraser Valley Rock Climbing

July 26th 2025

Description

This will be an opportunity to check out a climbing area possibly new to some Vancouver Section members. I climbed a number of days in the Fraser Valley last year and have a copy of The Fraser Valley Climbing Guide. The plan for Saturday July 26th is to meet at Mackin Park for 8 am. We’ll sort out car pooling and drive to Elbow Lake (166 km round trip). I have in mind Hadrians Wall (10 routes 5.6 to 5.11d sport) and 20 min walk away is Girl Friend Slab (4 routes 5.8 to 5.11d mostly trad with the 5.11d route bolted according to the guide book). Just right of Girl Friend Slab is the fun Tiny Dancer 5.10+ sport. If we’re back to the cars at 4 pm, we should be back at Mackin Park for 5:30 pm. I’m flexible on the timing for the day and am happy to go with the majority.

I can’t tell from the guide book if the routes are top rope accessible but intend on leading to put ropes up.

Required equipment: helmet, harness, climbing shoes, belay device.

Recommended: lunch, snacks, water, sun screen.

Hazards (updated July 24, 2025): the following list of hazards is not exhaustive but includes rock fall, travel over unmaintained trails with trip and slip fall risk, equipment failure, negligence or “user error” and ground fall. Climbing is a dangerous activity. There is risk of serious injury or death.

When signing up can folks let me know if they’re willing to drive and how many passengers they can take. Please also let me know if you have a rope (60m will do) and quickdraws. I don’t expect there’ll be any difficulty getting the rope/gear to climber ratio correct but I may juggle sign-ups if necessary.
