The Jared Stanley Memorial Mountain Safety Lecture

November 28th 2012

Description

In January 2005, Jared Stanley, a UBC student,
passed away while back country skiing on Mount
Seymour. Every year, the VOC hosts a memorial
lecture in his name, this year’s will the 8th
instalment. While Jared wasn’t an ACCer or VOCer,
he’s the sort of guy that probably would have
ended up knocking on the VOC’s or ACC’s door at
some point, so the VOC sort of adopted him and the
lecture.

Jared’s family, Anna and Bob Parton, fly out every
year to attend the lecture and speak a little bit
about Jared. The Partons are great speakers and
great people. Much like the VOC sort of adopted
Jared, the Partons sort of adopted the VOC.

The Partons memories of Jared will be followed by
a talk given by one of Canadian Avalanche Centre’s
forecasters. We constantly look at the CAC’s
mountain forecasts in order to determine the risk
of avalanches in the backcountry. This should be
an interesting lecture on the insights of
predicting avalanches and overall safety.

Its an interesting, and emotional evening and very
much worth attending for people of all experience
levels.
