Description
Purpose To provide an opportunity, for qualified members and aspiring Winter Event Coordinators, to learn and practice, by means of a structured program, a selection of commonly used Ski Touring and Mountaineering Skills. For the purpose of preparing them to coordinate typical intermediate level Winter Touring and Mountaineering Events such as the Garibaldi Nevé the Spearhead Traverse, other traverses in the nearby area such as the Pemberton or Lillooet Ice Caps’ as well as day or overnight mountaineering objectives in the area such as, Baker, Shuksan, Ipsoot, Marriott, Joffre etc.. Method Sessions will be facilitated by experienced advanced level club member volunteers as well as intermediate level skiers who are also experienced event coordinators. The program will be conducted in a mentor-member (colloquium) style. Curriculum Over the course of an evening Dry School and 2 overnight weekend events Information in the following areas (but not limited to) will be covered Dry School Crevasse Rescue & Prussik practice, Weekend 1 Glacier Travel on Skis Setting a track, route finding, Unroped to roped Travel on Glaciated Terrain Avalanche companion rescue, Brief review only knowledge & experience already required) Weekend 2 Ski Mountaineering Techniques Roped travel, Prerigging for glacier travel Crevasse fall: Self Rescue, Crevasse Rescue Itinerary Feb 24 BCIT climbing Gym 6 – 9 pm Crevasse Rescue & Prussik practice Feb 26/27 Mt Matier (Keith’s’ hut) March 5/6 Blackcomb Glacier (backcountry)
