Ski Touring and Glacier Travel Skills

January 20th 2012

Description

After last years success, this is the second time we offer
this great program. The purpose is to prepare those with
intermediate skiing and mountaineering experience, as well as
aspiring winter event coordinators, with the knowledge, skills
and confidence to participate, assist, or lead backcountry ski
trips. And all of this safely and enjoyably.

The program consists of two dry schools at Friday nights,
and
two overnight weekend events. The dry schools will be held at
the
BCIT climbing gym. The first weekend will be in the Mt Seymour
backcountry, the second weekend we will go to Whistler
backcountry.

Some of the topics that will be covered:

Dry school 1: Ascending rope (weighted and
un-weighted), leadership skills & responsibilities

Weekend 1: Trip planning, navigation (map,
compass, gps),
travel & track setting, snow pack analysis, avalanche companion
rescue, transitions
(horizontal to near
vertical, snow to ice), leading a group, winter
camping

Dry School 2: Crevasse rescue systems (2:1, 3:1)

Weekend 2: Snow anchors, traveling roped up,
crevasse rescue,
winter camping, putting everything together!
