Rock Climbing in Smith Rock, OR, USA

November 7th 2013

Description

November is that in-between month so let’s go sport climbing at Smith Rocks in Oregon! I LOVE this place so I hope I am posting this far enough in advance that some of you lovely folks can join me! There are over 1800 climbing routes with a wide range of difficulty. The first bolt and be pretty high though, so I recommend bringing a stick clip. This is in the desert, so there is a good chance the conditions will be dry, and it can be fairly warm in the sun but it cools down quite a bit in the shade and at night. I am going to take an extra 1 or 2 days off to make this a 4-5 day “weekend.” It’s about an 8 hour drive, so the extra days are a nice cushion to still allow lots of climbing! There can be some flexibility built into when people come and go. I thought we would leave the day before, starting to drive later in the day. Also, the campground near the climbs is first come first serve so if we get there a day or two before the weekend I’m hoping we’ll get a spot. There is another campground that is a short drive from the crag so it’s no big deal if we don’t, but who doesn’t want to wake up to a stunning view of all of the climbs! Participants must have experience climbing and be able to look after themselves. This trip requires that people know how to belay and preferably how to clean an anchor and rappel, but we need a good balance of people who know how to lead climb, lead belay, and have gear as well. Final group composition will depend on all of these factors. If I haven’t climbed with you before, please send me an email letting me know your experience, ability, and what gear you have. If you have any questions, please let me know as well. Yay climbing! More info about the park: http://www.smithrock.com/aboutsr/parkinfo/index.html
