Practice Building Trad Anchors

October 3rd 2020

Description

Building trad anchors is a complex skill that seems to me best to practise on mock lead.

The plan is to aim to be at the Smoke Bluffs by 1:00 PM and to go to Call It a Day, a secluded crag with three climbs at 5.6, one climb at 5.7, and highly featured rock.

We will set up top-ropes, and the person building the trad anchor will then start climbing on a second rope until she/he finds a reasonable spot to build an anchor mid-route. I have led all four of the routes at Call It a Day and would be happy to set up the top-ropes.

Required experience to join this trip:
– belaying on lead
– building and cleaning top-rope anchors with bolted anchor points
– rappelling
Experience belaying and climbing on two ropes would be handy, as would prior experience leading trad.

Important: This is not an instructional course and should not take the place of formal instruction. Participants are expected to bring their own knowledge.

Also important: I can provide a double rack and one rope, but we will need a second rope for this event. I will bring the fourth edition of Squamish Select, a quad sling, two double slings, six metres of 7-mm cordelette, and carabiners for building anchors.

Screening questions:
– please describe your previous experience climbing trad
– have you belayed and climbed on two ropes before?
– can you provide a second rope?
– have you reviewed the ACC’s protocols for safety during COVID-19 at http://accvancouver.ca/?
