Cycling Tour de San Juan Islands – Mount Constitution

May 17th 2014

Description

Cycling Tour de San Juan Island’s

The goal is to ride up Mount Constitution in Moran
State Park on Orcas Island in the San Juan
Islands.

This is the ideal itinerary. I have never
organized a cycling ride this complicated (ferry’s
make it harder) before so we may have to change
the plan along the way. I am pretty much
compressing a 4 day trip in 3 days. After
Bellingham, the whole trip is fairly hilly. I
can’t really think of any flat portion at all
(except maybe the ferry terminal.)

Saturday morning – Ride to border and meet in
Blaine at 8:00am. (cyclists go straight inside to
pass immigration. expect at least an hour inside
border as this is one of busiest times of year)
ride from Blaine to Anacortes (61 miles) on
Saturday morning. Should be around 6 hours of
riding time. We’ll have stops along the way for
coffees and snacks. Goal is to catch the 3:40pm
ferry to Orcas Island. Depending on energy levels
we may try camping at Obstruction Pass State Park
(20 hard miles or around 2.5 hours) on the
southeastern part of the island. This is a really
beautiful campsite.

Sunday – Wake up and leave camp 7’ish and ride up
Mount Constitution (2.5 hours or so to the top
from the campsite).

(Average grade: 8.5 % Length: 6.37 km Height
start: 186 m Height top: 733 m Elevation gain: 547
m Maximum: 12 %)

Then ride to the ferry terminal (say 2 hours).
Try to take 12:40 ferry to Friday Harbour (arrive
2:00pm) and spend night at San Juan Park on west
site of San Juan Island (around 2 hours cycling).
We’ll ride counter clockwise around the island and
try and check out the crazy little resort harbor
of Roche Harbor on the way.

Monday – Wake up early and complete the southern
part of the island (1.5 hours). 9:55am catch ferry
to Sidney, BC and ride bikes catch ferry back to
Vancouver. Arrive Tsawwasen and ride back to
Vancouver for mid-afternoon.

Costs:

I think $25 for the ferry and $8 for each night of
camping. Cost may be a bit higher.
